Coastal Evergreen Rainforest Ecosystem
Conserving the Grey Parrot in Ghana’s last known population stronghold
Project Overview
The Parrots and People Project is being implemented over 12 months (February 2026 – January 2027) to support community-based conservation of the Grey Parrot (Psittacus erithacus), a species listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List. The project forms part of the Cape Three Points Integrated Biodiversity Conservation Initiative (CTP-IBCI), which aims to restore degraded habitats in the “Parrot Village” and surrounding areas near the Cape Three Points Forest Reserve in southwestern Ghana.
The project adopts a comprehensive, community-based conservation approach that integrates data collection, local empowerment, habitat restoration, and community engagement. These interventions are designed to address key threats such as poaching and illegal logging while improving habitat quality. Collectively, they will contribute to securing the long-term survival of Grey Parrots in southwestern Ghana.

This project aims to make a meaningful and lasting contribution to the conservation of the Grey Parrot in Ghana by addressing key threats and promoting sustainable, community-driven solutions.
Key Components of the Project
Biodiversity Monitoring: Determine the abundance and distribution of Grey Parrots in and around the “parrot village”.
Capacity Building: Train a corps of community-based parrot guardians to monitor and report attempted poaching and illegal logging
Vegetative Mapping: Identify, map, and protect large trees used for feeding, perching, and nesting, as well as safeguard natural saplings.
Enrichment Planting: Plant native tree species to restore habitat quality.
Awareness Creation: Organise parrot-themed awareness creation and education activities in the parrot village and surrounding communities.
Expected Outcomes
- A good understanding of the numbers of Grey Parrots in the project area, as well as their distribution
- Near-real-time access to information about the safety of parrots and their habitats in the project area
- Availability of data on the approximate number and distribution of trees of potential importance to grey parrot ecology in the project area
- Grey Parrot habitat improvement initiative implemented
- The people of the Parrot Village are more informed and knowledgeable about the importance of parrots to both the environment and society.
