Conserving Sea Turtles and Marine Mammals in Ghana Through Community-Led Action

Marine mammals and sea turtles in Ghana’s marine waters and along its coastline face increasing threats from bycatch, poaching, and habitat degradation. To help address these challenges, Pronature Alliance Ghana, together with Wildseas Ghana and other conservation partners, is implementing the Marine and Coastal Wildlife and People Project at key fishing communities, including Dixcove and Axim.

The project supports monitoring of sea turtle nesting activities and marine mammal bycatch while assessing fishing practices and their impacts on marine biodiversity. Community volunteers and fisherfolk are being trained to monitor and report conservation threats, contributing valuable local knowledge to strengthen research and outreach activities.

The initiative also includes awareness campaigns and socio-economic surveys to improve understanding of local perceptions and livelihoods linked to marine wildlife. Through research, education, and community engagement, the project seeks to promote sustainable coastal resource management and strengthen conservation of Ghana’s marine ecosystems.
