Conserving the Grey Parrot in Ghana's Last Known Population Stronghold

The endangered Grey Parrot (Psittacus erithacus) continues to face serious threats from habitat loss, illegal logging, and poaching in southwestern Ghana. To support its conservation, Pronature Alliance Ghana, together with the Parrot Forest Association, and with funding from the World Parrot Trust and other donors, is implementing the Parrots and People Project under the Cape Three Points Integrated Biodiversity Conservation Initiative (CTP-IBCI).

The project combines biodiversity monitoring, enrichment planting to improve habitats, community training, and conservation awareness activities to strengthen protection for Grey Parrots and their habitats. Community members are being trained as parrot guardians to monitor illegal activities, while important nesting and feeding trees are being mapped and protected. Native tree planting activities are also underway to enrich degraded habitat patches with “parrot-friendly” native trees.

Through this community-led approach, the project aims to improve knowledge of Grey Parrot populations in southwestern Ghana while promoting long-term conservation stewardship in the “Parrot Village” and surrounding communities.
